Top 5 Reasons the Disney Fantasy is an Ideal Vacation for Families

Disney Cruise Line has long been a favorite for families looking for a vacation that pleases everyone. Their newest ship, the Disney Fantasy does not disappoint!  They have taken all of the fantastic things about the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder and kicked them up a notch.

Here are the top 5 features of the Disney Fantasy that will make your vacation one to remember for a lifetime:

Disney Entertainment:  Disney is without a doubt one of the most respected names in entertainment and certainly tops in family entertainment.  They continue live up to that reputation with entertainment on board the Disney Fantasy.  The nightly shows in the Walt Disney theater are Broadway caliber productions complete with your favorite Disney characters. The newest production at sea, Aladdin , is definitely not to be missed!

The entertainment doesn’t stop there. Even the art work on board gets in to the act. Interactive art, which looks like a regular picture comes to life if you pause to look at it. Some of these pictures are even hiding clues to a mystery kids can solve with help from the Mid-ship Detective Agency featuring the Muppets. While dining in the Animator’s Palate dining room guests create their own animated character that is then brought to life and made to be a part of the show during dinner. “Pirate Night” has been a guest favorite on Disney cruises for some time now but the Buccaneer Blast and Pirate Party on the Disney Dream takes the experience to a new level. Disney is the only cruise line to have fireworks at sea and on the Fantasy, those fireworks are set to music. This is one party you won’t want to miss!

Youth Activities: When you think Disney, you think children. The majority of Disney Cruise Line guests are families traveling with children but remarkably the ship doesn’t seem overrun with kids. Why? Because they are almost always engaged in the kids activities onboard! Disney offers supervised programming for kids age 3 months to 17. Onboard the Disney Dream children age 3 months – 2 years enjoy the It’s a Small World nursery which is staffed with caring “counselors” and equipped with everything from soft toys to rows of cribs for nap time. Children age 3-10 will love the Oceaneers Club and Oceaneers Lab.  While these two clubs flow together through a project room and children can move from one to the other, typically the Oceaneers Club appeals to those age 3-7 and the Oceaneers Lab for ages 8-10. Both clubs offer ample play space with lots of high tech play options plus some good old fashioned fun with everything from dress up to board games.

Tweens will enjoy their own space at Edge where they can make green screen movies, mix their own music or even hang out on their own water deck with a splash pad and sun deck. Teens will enjoy Vibe with it’s key card access areas, private pool deck at the front of the ship, shipboard social networking options and even their own spa called “Chill.”  Don’t be surprised when you hear parents telling their children that yes, they do have to come out to have dinner or spend time with the family!

Night Life for Mom and Dad: There is plenty for Mom and Dad to do while the kids are in their respective clubs! The adult areas of the ship include everything from intimate cocktail lounges, a sports bar, a dance club and even an in-the-pool bar at the adult only pool! There is even a private, adult only beach on Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in the Bahamas. Disney does insist that the 18 and up age limits are strictly followed in these areas. Be sure to make time to check out The Tube, the high energy dance club found in Europa. Our group had lots of fun there. We recommend you give one of their signature drinks – the Tuppany Tube – a try!

Well Designed Staterooms: Ask anyone who has ever cruised before to describe their stateroom and “spacious” is not a word they are likely to use. Space on a cruise ship is limited so staterooms are typically quite small. The staterooms on the Disney Fantasy are very thoughtfully designed to make the best use every inch of space. Though it may seem like common sense, most cruise lines do not leave enough space under the bed to store luggage. Thankfully Disney corrected this and even the largest suitcase in your luggage set will slide under your bed for storage. There are ample shelves, drawers and closet space for storing your wardrobe while on board. Disney introduced the concept of the split bath on their first ships and the Fantasy features them as well. Most staterooms have 2 separate bathrooms; one with a sink and toilet and the other with a sink and tub/shower combination. The designers of the stateroom seem to have though of everything, except to include an outlet in the bathroom for plugging in a hair dryer! If your family likes to sleep in, pack a long extension cord to or plan to have to turn on the lights and run the hair dryer in the vanity area as your family covers their heads with pillows and considers tossing you, or at least your hair dryer, overboard.

The AquaDuck: Dubbed a “water coaster at sea”, the AquaDuck is 765 ft of fun! Riders are taken out over the edge of the ship and along the top deck overlooking the pool and outdoor movie screen. The ride is fun for all and not at all scary. There has been some criticism that it is not enough of a thrill but it was never intended to be “Space Mountain at Sea” but rather a family fun attraction. Judging by the line of people waiting to ride again and again, it earns a thumbs up. Water in the AquaDuck is heated, but the wind on deck can make it a bit refreshing in winter months as you queue up for another chance to “do the Duck.”

The Disney Fantasy is a truly beautiful ship that is reminiscent of a classic ocean liner. Equipped with the latest in technology and thoughtful design, Disney strikes a perfect balance of elegance and entertainment. It is no wonder that almost 90% of first time cruisers say they will plan another cruise vacation in the future!

New Stateroom Categories on the Disney Dream and Fantasy

DELUXE OCEANVIEW STATEROOM WITH VERANDAH ON THE DISNEY DREAM

Disney Cruise Line is absolutely an industry leader when it comes to stateroom design! Larger staterooms with more storage, split bathrooms and cool virtual portholes make Disney staterooms unique. Now, onboard the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, there are even more stateroom categories to help you find the perfect “home on the sea” for your vacation.

Effective Oct. 18, a total of 120 staterooms will be re-categorized into five new categories.

  • 4E – Deluxe Family Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah – Oversized Verandah
  • 5E – Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Verandah – Oversized Verandah, some with solid white wall
  • 7A – Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Navigator Verandah, Undersized or Obstructed Verandah
  • 9C – Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom, One Porthole, Obstructed View
  • 9D – Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom, One Porthole, Obstructed View – limited view of ocean
This changed was prompted by feedback from guests who have sailed in these staterooms. If you have a cruise booked in one of these staterooms, you will be notified by your travel agent or Disney Cruise Line very soon. If your stateroom was recategorized in to a higher priced category, your current pricing will still be honored. If your stateroom is now in a lower priced category, your reservation will be credited with the price difference and a refund will be issued if your cruise is paid in full.
The staterooms affected this change are as follows:

More info from Disney night!

Our ask a question link was not working during the web cast but I can see the questions now. Here are the answers to your questions:

Ally from Long Island, NY asked: Do you need to make advance resrvations for the spas on the Magic and the Dream?
Yes, it is always a good idea to make advance reservations for spa appointments but you can make them once on the ship as well. For the best availability, book in advance but they will generally have some availability once you are on board.

Theresa from Fishers, IN asked: Has anyone done the Fireworks Dessert Party?
Yes! It’s a great option  for fireworks viewing in the Magic Kingdom! You definitely want to make advance reservations for this as soon as possible if  this is something you are interested in. Feel free to contact me if you want more info!

Matt from Kennesaw, GA asked: What is the big differences between the Disney World moderate and value resorts? What do you recommend for a first time visitor with two small kids?
There are a few differences. The biggest differences, in my opinion are that the value resorts have a very high energy feel with bright colors and lots of larger-than-life statues of Disney characters. They are largely concrete areas – themed with Disney to the max and lots of fun. but still concrete. The moderate resorts are beautifully landscaped and have more of a relaxing feel. They are a nice break from the parks. The themeing is accomplished through architecture and landscape rather than Disney characters. It’s a totally different feel! The rooms are also noticeably larger at the moderate resorts. The value resort rooms are 260 sq ft whereas the moderate resorts are 314 sq ft. You really feel that difference when you have 4 people in the room! Another big difference, that is of vital importance to my kids, is the pool! Value resorts have a large themed pool and a smaller quiet pool. The pool has water features like sprinklers but no water slides. At the moderate resorts, the themed pool has a water slide and there are usually more than one quiet pool.  As far as which I recommend, that would depend on the age of your kids and your budget. My rule of thumb is usually that if you can comfortably afford the moderate resort, it is worth the upgrade but if it will not be comfortable within your budget, then opt for the value resort. You won’t go wrong either way but the relaxing feel, larger rooms and upgraded amentities are worth it if you have that option!

Pam from Kennesaw, GA asked: I live in Cobb County and school will start back after Christmas holidays on January 10. Is the first week of January a good time to travel? Is this an off season? What deals are available?
January is the perfect alternative to our lost September break (I’ve had to reschedule my vacation too!). As a matter of fact, I wrote an article on that for Examiner.com! They have not released discounts for January yet, but you can rest assured that there will be some sort of special offer starting January 2, 2012!

Anonymous asked: Is it still hot enough to do the waterparks in September?
Oh yes! Absolutely! September is a great time to travel in terms of crowds but you still have the heat and humidity so the water parks are a welcome break from that heat!

Jen from Stone Mountain asked: How does Disney go about helping families with children with special needs such as Austism?
You won’t find another destination that is more accomodating of guests with special needs of any type than Disney. It’s tough to give a short and sweet answer for this. Look for a blog post addressing this on Thursday morning!

They voyage of a lifetime may be closer than you think!

If your “Dream” or “Fantasy” is to experience the “Magic” or “Wonder” of a Disney Cruise, Mickey may just be bringing his ships closer to you than ever before! (Pardon the bad puns, I just couldn’t help myself!).

This afternoon Disney Cruise Line (finally) announced that yes, all of the rampant speculation was correct, they are in fact bringing the Disney Magic to Galveston, Texas and New York, NY in 2012. Also announced was that the Disney Wonder will set sail from Seattle, WA for her Alaska cruise itineraries.

This is fantastic news not just for Disney fans in New York and Texas, but also to their local economies. Disney estimates that they will be bringing nearly 50,000 cruisers – and their tourism dollars - to both ports of call.

Beginning May 25, 2012, the Wonder will depart on 2, 5 and 8 day sailings from New York. Departures will include 8-night cruises to the Bahamas, 5-night cruises along the New England coast to Canada and a 2-night cruise to nowhere.

The itinerary for the 8-night Bahamas cruises will include stops at Nassau, Bahamas, Disney private island, Castaway Cay and Port Canaveral, Florida. A one-day park hopper ticket to Walt Disney World and transportation from the ship to Walt Disney World is included in the price of the cruise. Rates begin at $1240 per person based on double occupancy for a standard inside stateroom.

Five night Canadian cruises along the New England coast will include stops in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Saint John, New Brunswick. Rates for this itinerary will begin at $715 per person based on double occupancy for a standard inside stateroom.

Families will have the opportunity to experience a taste of Disney Cruise Line on three 2-night cruises to nowhere departing from New York. Rates on these weekend cruises will begin at $370 per person based on double occupancy for a standard inside stateroom.

The Disney Magic will relocate to Galveston, TX beginning September 22, 2012. She will sail a series of 7-night Western Caribbean cruises calling on Grand Cayman, Costa Maya, Mexico and Cozumel, Mexico. This popular itinerary will give guests the opportunity to enjoy 3 days at sea to explore all of the ship has to offer and 3 days in port. Rates will begin at $840 per person based on double occupancy for a standard inside stateroom.

Disney will sail to Alaska for the first time this summer but in 2012 guests will have the opportunity to sail Alaska’s picturesque inside passage out of Seattle, WA. The Disney Wonder will begin 7-night Alaskan cruises beginning May 28, 2012 calling on Tracy Arm, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia. Rates will start at $917 per person based on double occupancy in a standard inside stateroom.

Booking for these new itineraries will begin April 7, 2011 for Gold and Platinum Castaway Club members and on April 8, 2011 for everyone else.

Which new itinerary appeals to you the most? Sound off in the comments!
