Celebrating 56 years of family fun and magic at Disneyland

“To all who come to this happy place: Welcome. Disneyland is your land. Here age relives fond memories of the past…and here youth may savor the challenge and promise of the future. Disneyland is dedicated to the ideals, the dreams, and the hard facts that have created America…with the hope that it will be a source of joy and inspiration to all the world.”

- Walt Disney

Dedication of Disneyland, July 17, 1955

56 years ago today, July 18, 1955, in what was at the time the “small town” of Anaheim, CA the general public was welcomed in to a Disney park for the very first time. The park was officially opened and dedicated on July 17th.

Walt Disney created his original theme park to be a place parents and children could enjoy quality family time and have fun together. Today, millions of families have cherished memories of their visits not only to the original Disneyland park, but to Disney parks and resorts around the world.

Original plans called for Disneyland to be a park for employees of Disney’s studios, a 45 acre park with a budget of approximately $9 million but Walt’s vision was never small! As Disneyland moved from an abstract concept into its opening day reality, it became a 160 acre park costing around $17 million that was to be open to the public.

There were many detractors who told Walt there was no place for such a park; it was a bad business decision. It was referred to as “Walt’s Folly.” Many told him people wouldn’t come, but come they did! Even an opening day plagued with problems that led to harshly critical reviews by reporters invited to attend didn’t deter Walt! Only seven weeks after opening day, the 1,000,000th guest passed through the gates of Disneyland. By only it’s second year Disneyland was turning a profit.

You can view the entire Disneyland dedication ceremony in the video below.

We are all thankful that Walt didn’t listen to those detractors; that his vision carried him forward. That vision and leap of faith opened the door for what is now a huge “empire” providing family fun and magic not just in Anaheim, CA but at Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL (which celebrates its 40th anniversary on October 1, 2011), at Disneyland parks in Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong and soon to be Shanghai, onboard 3 (soon to be 4!) cruise ships, on Adventures by Disney vacations at some of the world’s most exciting locations, and resorts in Vero Beach, FL, Hilton Head, SC and Ko Olina, Hawaii.

Yes, it may have all started with a mouse, but many thanks go to the man behind the mouse who had the foresight to stick to his dreams and see them through. He embodied the lesson taught to generations of children by Jiminy Cricket:

When you wish upon a star
Makes no difference who you are
Anything your heart desires
Will come to you

If your heart is in your dream
No request is too extreme
When you wish upon a star
As dreamers do

Fate is kind
She brings to those who love
The sweet fulfillment of
Their secret longing

Like a bolt out of the blue
Fate steps in and sees you through
When you wish upon a star
Your dreams come true.

Thanks for the memories, Walt!

Put a little education in your vacation with the Kingdom Keepers!

Meeting Ridley Parson, author of the Kingdom Keepers series on board the Disney Dream

The Magic Kingdom and other Disney parks seem the last place for anything “dark” to be happening but as fans of the Kingdom Keepers series by author Ridley Pearson know, things aren’t always as they seem!

In the Kingdom Keepers series, Disney employs 5 teenagers – Finn, Maybeck, Philby, Willa and Charleen – to act as the models for a new feature where holographic “tour guides” will guests through the Magic Kingdom. Through some special Disney magic, the teens find that they “automagically” enter the parks each night in hologram form to do battle with the Disney villians – the Overtakers – who are attempting to take over the Disney parks.

Now your children have the opportunity to help the Kingdom Keepers save the magic of the Disney parks from the Overtakers and become immersed in the story like never before! With the Kingdom Keepers Quest from Disney’s Youth Education Series, kids in grades 5-9 have the opportunity to join Finn, Maybeck, Philby, Willa and Charlene as Keepers. The quest takes them through the park solving problems much like Finn and company had to do in the first book, Kingdom Keepers: Disney After Dark.

Each “keeper in training” is given a unique park map that will guide them through the challenge. The group leader explains that the Keepers are in need of help and Wayne, the Disney Imagineer who worked with Walt Disney himself, has designed this quest to see if they have what it takes to become Keepers (in reality, the quest was created and designed by author Ridley Pearson). The kids work together in a small group to solve the puzzles in the quest.

Ridley Pearson says that “the Kingdom Keepers Quest involves problem solving, visualization, observation, creativity, math skills, language arts and critical thinking.” Pearson goes on to say that “by putting the kids in these educational experiences with a book they’ve read and seeing the book come alive, they learn the power of observation, they learn team play and they take a lot of these things and bring them back to the classroom and become better students for it.” (click the link for a video preview of the Kingdom Keepers Quest program!) Top Tips: Rainy Days at Disney Never Get Me Down

You’ve saved and planned and looked forward to your Walt Disney World vacation for some time now. All of your mental images for the trip have blue skies and puffy white clouds. So what do you do when the reality is grey skies, black clouds and rain? Your best bet is to grab a poncho and keep on going! We’ve put together some of our Top Tips for Rainy Day Fun at Walt Disney World!

Rainy Days at DisneyMy oldest son, Brandon, and I just returned for a quick trip to Orlando where we took some time to check out what’s new at Walt Disney World and to experience the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. As with all of our trips, I kept an eye on the forecast for Orlando for 10 days or so before our departure. Typical of summer in Orlando, every day had the little thunderstorm icon with a note that said “chance of afternoon or evening thunderstorms.” It’s par for the course for summer months in Central Florida! Most days we had lots of clouds and occasional sprinkles but on our last day we were treated to an all out storm!

If you find one (or more) of your vacation days will be a bit soggy, take heart; Disney can still be fun even in the rain! Keep in mind that Central Florida has always had a good amount of rain and the good folks at Disney Imagineering knew this when they designed the parks. Ever wonder why the majority of Disney’s rides and attractions are inside? You’ll be happy they made that decision when you can keep right on going with your theme park fun in the rain.
