More info from Disney night!

Our ask a question link was not working during the web cast but I can see the questions now. Here are the answers to your questions:

Ally from Long Island, NY asked: Do you need to make advance resrvations for the spas on the Magic and the Dream?
Yes, it is always a good idea to make advance reservations for spa appointments but you can make them once on the ship as well. For the best availability, book in advance but they will generally have some availability once you are on board.

Theresa from Fishers, IN asked: Has anyone done the Fireworks Dessert Party?
Yes! It’s a great option  for fireworks viewing in the Magic Kingdom! You definitely want to make advance reservations for this as soon as possible if  this is something you are interested in. Feel free to contact me if you want more info!

Matt from Kennesaw, GA asked: What is the big differences between the Disney World moderate and value resorts? What do you recommend for a first time visitor with two small kids?
There are a few differences. The biggest differences, in my opinion are that the value resorts have a very high energy feel with bright colors and lots of larger-than-life statues of Disney characters. They are largely concrete areas – themed with Disney to the max and lots of fun. but still concrete. The moderate resorts are beautifully landscaped and have more of a relaxing feel. They are a nice break from the parks. The themeing is accomplished through architecture and landscape rather than Disney characters. It’s a totally different feel! The rooms are also noticeably larger at the moderate resorts. The value resort rooms are 260 sq ft whereas the moderate resorts are 314 sq ft. You really feel that difference when you have 4 people in the room! Another big difference, that is of vital importance to my kids, is the pool! Value resorts have a large themed pool and a smaller quiet pool. The pool has water features like sprinklers but no water slides. At the moderate resorts, the themed pool has a water slide and there are usually more than one quiet pool.  As far as which I recommend, that would depend on the age of your kids and your budget. My rule of thumb is usually that if you can comfortably afford the moderate resort, it is worth the upgrade but if it will not be comfortable within your budget, then opt for the value resort. You won’t go wrong either way but the relaxing feel, larger rooms and upgraded amentities are worth it if you have that option!

Pam from Kennesaw, GA asked: I live in Cobb County and school will start back after Christmas holidays on January 10. Is the first week of January a good time to travel? Is this an off season? What deals are available?
January is the perfect alternative to our lost September break (I’ve had to reschedule my vacation too!). As a matter of fact, I wrote an article on that for Examiner.com! They have not released discounts for January yet, but you can rest assured that there will be some sort of special offer starting January 2, 2012!

Anonymous asked: Is it still hot enough to do the waterparks in September?
Oh yes! Absolutely! September is a great time to travel in terms of crowds but you still have the heat and humidity so the water parks are a welcome break from that heat!

Jen from Stone Mountain asked: How does Disney go about helping families with children with special needs such as Austism?
You won’t find another destination that is more accomodating of guests with special needs of any type than Disney. It’s tough to give a short and sweet answer for this. Look for a blog post addressing this on Thursday morning!

Top Tips for Toddlers!

Toddlers love Disney too!I’m asked quite often “how young is too young?” or “is it really worth bringing my toddler to Walt Disney World?”

I am a mother of 3 boys. My oldest took his first trip at age 3 1/2. My middle son was 21 months old for his first trip. My youngest takes the crown for “earliest dose of Disney!” He made a trip in-utero but met Mickey for the first time at the tender age of 3 months. Would I do those toddler trips again? Absolutely!

Moms know, taking a toddler anywhere involves some planning and usually a lot of “stuff” to tote with you on your trip. Your little one is sure to have a fantastic time on your vacation but here are my top tips for traveling with toddlers: Continue reading

Top 5 Disney Questions

I spent last weekend working the Magical Memories Travel booth at the Kennesaw Big Shanty Festival. I had a great time and met lots of really nice Disney fans. Who knew there were so many Disney fanatics in Kennesaw! I loved having people see our signs and walk up saying “if it has to do with ‘the Mouse,’ I’m all over it!”

Every year when I do this, it seems like the same questions come up quite often. I thought maybe it was time to put them in writing! I’m always happy to talk Disney and answer questions like this so why not blog it too.

#5: Is the dining plan really worth it?
My answer for this one isn’t entirely cut and dry. If it fits the way your family eats then yes, it is almost always going to save you money on your dining. If you have to force it to fit, then it may not be the best idea for you. I would say that 95 of guests that we send to Disney take advantage of the dining plan and I have only had one family tell me that they disliked the plan and two families say they weren’t sure if they would do it again. The vast majority of guests come home saying it was fantastic for them and they were really glad they opted to add it to their package.

#4 – Is it better to stay onsite or off site?
It’s a matter of personal preference but I will tell you that my personal preference is absolutely, positively, unequivocably, ONSITE. I love the convenience of staying onsite. I love that I can have packages sent back to the resort if I find something I must have at the theme parks (with 3 kids I have enough stuff to cart around with us, I don’t need the shopping bags too, thankyouverymuch!). I love that it is super easy to get back to the hotel for a break when we need it. I love that once we arrive on site, there is no driving. We park and let Disney take care of the rest! I love that we have the option to add the dining plan! I love knowing that the resort will be clean, well maintained, feel safe and have better than average customer service.

I always remind guests looking at off site options that Disney World is 47 square miles of property. When your hotel says they are 5 miles from Disney property, they mean from the gate, not from the parks! Don’t be surprised for it to take you more than half an hour to drive from your hotel to the parks and then add in time to get parked, hop a tram and get to the park gates. That is not a big deal for some people, but it’s a deal breaker for others!

#3 – What is your favorite resort?
I’d have to say that my absolute favorite resort the Grand Floridian is my favorite followed very, VERY closely by the Boardwalk Inn. My favorite moderate resort is a tie between Coronado Springs Resort and Port Orleans French Quarter – I like them for different reasons so top billing flip flops back and forth! I don’t have a really strong opinion on a favorite value resort. There are things I like about all of them.

#2 – When is the best time to visit?
That depends, define what criteria determines best for you? If it is the lowest possible crowds, the answer is January and early February (avoiding President’s Day week) or September.  If the answer is a great balance between beautiful weather and  moderate crowds, then I recommend May (the earlier the better!), October and from after Thanksgiving to just before Christmas.

#1 – What is the best age to bring your kids to Disney?
There is really something for every age group from 1 to 100 so there is no wrong time to bring them. I personally absolutely love the age range from about 3-5. They are old enough to enjoy the parks and the rides but young enough that the magic is truly real to them. That’s the “really real” Cinderella, Mickey, Buzz Lightyear, Peter Pan or whoever their favorite characters are. There is absolutely nothing like getting to see Disney World through the eyes of young child. It’s pure magic, plain and simple!

If you were out at the Big Shanty Festival this weekend and stopped by, thank you!  It was a pleasure meeting you!  For all of you Disney fans out there, I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of these questions!

See you real soon!

They voyage of a lifetime may be closer than you think!

If your “Dream” or “Fantasy” is to experience the “Magic” or “Wonder” of a Disney Cruise, Mickey may just be bringing his ships closer to you than ever before! (Pardon the bad puns, I just couldn’t help myself!).

This afternoon Disney Cruise Line (finally) announced that yes, all of the rampant speculation was correct, they are in fact bringing the Disney Magic to Galveston, Texas and New York, NY in 2012. Also announced was that the Disney Wonder will set sail from Seattle, WA for her Alaska cruise itineraries.

This is fantastic news not just for Disney fans in New York and Texas, but also to their local economies. Disney estimates that they will be bringing nearly 50,000 cruisers – and their tourism dollars - to both ports of call.

Beginning May 25, 2012, the Wonder will depart on 2, 5 and 8 day sailings from New York. Departures will include 8-night cruises to the Bahamas, 5-night cruises along the New England coast to Canada and a 2-night cruise to nowhere.

The itinerary for the 8-night Bahamas cruises will include stops at Nassau, Bahamas, Disney private island, Castaway Cay and Port Canaveral, Florida. A one-day park hopper ticket to Walt Disney World and transportation from the ship to Walt Disney World is included in the price of the cruise. Rates begin at $1240 per person based on double occupancy for a standard inside stateroom.

Five night Canadian cruises along the New England coast will include stops in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Saint John, New Brunswick. Rates for this itinerary will begin at $715 per person based on double occupancy for a standard inside stateroom.

Families will have the opportunity to experience a taste of Disney Cruise Line on three 2-night cruises to nowhere departing from New York. Rates on these weekend cruises will begin at $370 per person based on double occupancy for a standard inside stateroom.

The Disney Magic will relocate to Galveston, TX beginning September 22, 2012. She will sail a series of 7-night Western Caribbean cruises calling on Grand Cayman, Costa Maya, Mexico and Cozumel, Mexico. This popular itinerary will give guests the opportunity to enjoy 3 days at sea to explore all of the ship has to offer and 3 days in port. Rates will begin at $840 per person based on double occupancy for a standard inside stateroom.

Disney will sail to Alaska for the first time this summer but in 2012 guests will have the opportunity to sail Alaska’s picturesque inside passage out of Seattle, WA. The Disney Wonder will begin 7-night Alaskan cruises beginning May 28, 2012 calling on Tracy Arm, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria, British Columbia. Rates will start at $917 per person based on double occupancy in a standard inside stateroom.

Booking for these new itineraries will begin April 7, 2011 for Gold and Platinum Castaway Club members and on April 8, 2011 for everyone else.

Which new itinerary appeals to you the most? Sound off in the comments!

Let the (Dining) Memories Begin!

Narrowing down favorite memories from our Walt Disney World vacations is almost impossible. It’s sort of like being asking which of my 3 children is my favorite. I guess it wouldn’t make for very interesting reading for me to say “I love the all the same but for different reasons” like I tell my sons though, would it?

There are a couple of standout memories for me. We’ll skip over the story about how I was struggling to get the sharp “spear” out of my then 2 year old son’s hand from when Ohana used to serve pineapple with caramel sauce to dip it in. Lets just say it ends with the chunk of pineapple flying off of his spear and hitting a nearby diner… the lady in a couple with no kids in tow…in the head and my mortification lasting well past the trip as I just KNEW I would read about some unruly toddler randomly flinging fruit and ruining their lovely dinner in someone’s trip report (fortunately I didn’t!).

I’d have to say that my favorite dining memory is one I have mentioned in the past. It happened on our very first trip to Disney World with children. To set the scene I will tell you that we were traveling Christmas week and our travel party consisted of my parents, Grammy and Poppy, my husband and I and our sons who were 3 1/2 and 21 months at the time. The trip was a surprise for our sons. They knew we were planning a trip for later that Spring but Poppy had bought an RV and wanted to have some upgrades done to it. One of the few places he could have it done was in Kissimmee so shortly after Thanksgiving he offered to take us all to Disney World the day after Christmas as a present (nothing like planning a last minute for the busiest week of the year!). Our 3 year old was very excited about our trip planned for May. Both the boys were huge fans of Pooh and friends. They watched both the sing-a-long videos and the Disney World vacation planning video (which they started calling “Magic Lives”) over and over ad nauseum. The one thing our 3 year old wanted to do was to “have eggs and sausage with Pooh and Tigger.” Fortunately, the dining deity smiled upon us and we were able to get a reservation for a late breakfast at Crystal Palace for the first day of our trip.  It worked out perfectly as  we dropped of the RV and headed to the Magic Kingdom so our first stop was at the Crystal Palace.

Our reservation was for the very end of breakfast service and the restaurant was almost empty. Our 21 month old son didn’t understand he was about to meet his buddies. He went nuts just seeing the character topiary at the front of the restaurant but, surprisingly, when we walked in to be seated, none of the characters were around so he still had no idea. We were seated and put him in his high chair. Not long after, Pooh came out from “back stage” and started walking to our table. I swear, he nearly knocked the high chair over he was so excited to see Pooh heading towards us!

We were just about the only family on our side of the restaurant (this is still a bit shocking to me given that it was Christmas week!). My husband took him out of the high chair and set him down. He took of running towards Pooh.  Pooh stopped, knelt down and held out his arms. Connor just ran right in to his arms and collapsed on him in a big huge hug. He just kept saying “my Pooh!  Love my Pooh!” over and over. I don’t think we have any pictures of him with Pooh where he is actually facing the camera because he was not going to look away from his buddy for anything (a theme that was repeated with the Toy Story characters when we returned in May).

Pooh, and later Tigger, ended up sitting there and playing peek-a-boo and tickling both of our sons for quite some time as my parents, my husband and I sat back and watched.

That was our very first stop, on our sons very first trip and if you had told me that I had to turn around and leave without going any further in to the park that day, I still would have had my fill of magic for the trip! Both of the boys talked about that, and asked to watch the video over and over for years.  I still get teary just thinking about it and it has been almost 7 years, and many happy memories, since that trip. The Crystal Palace will always have a special place in my heart because that is where the real magic of Disney came alive for my children for the very first time and where “the magic of Disney” took on a whole new meaning for me as I experienced it for the first time as a mother. I think it is also where that magic creeped in to my husband’s heart. He went from quietly grumbling about having 2 trips planned to the same place inside of a year to saying he believed the vacation brought him closer to our sons. Now he asks when the next trip is planned almost (but not quite) as much as the kids do!

So, tell me, what is your favorite dining memory?  If your least favorite dining memory is getting hit in the head with a chunk of pineapple at Ohana sometime in October of 2004, once again, I am SO sorry about that!
